Mooning over the Moon

I'm going to have to get some help from Princess Froglips. (She's excellent at photos -- I know, I've already exclaimed her excellence at knitting, and costumes, and probably many other things. She's exceptionally talented.) Husband called me out into the yard to see the moon and I so wanted to take pictures.

Unfortunately, they mostly came out looking like this...

I got one that looked like this...

But even that didn't really show the coolness of the clouds over the moon. Partially because the night wasn't entirely dark, so I could see the spread of clouds across the sky. Some photoshop adjustments and I came up with...

this (that's moss nearly covering a tree)...

and this...

But I do believe I have proven that taking pictures at night is not something you can do with just any digital camera and no training. I would be thrilled to have some hints if any of you know how it's done. I tried the two tricks I know. I turned off flash for some and turned on macro for others. But then I didn't write down which ones, so I have no idea if those things helped or not.

I am almost entirely a point and click person.
